Major Winter Storm Hitting Denver This Weekend – Is Your Roof Ready?
Incoming Storm Alert: Heavy Snow & Ice Predicted for Denver
If you’ve been watching the news, you know KDVR and the National Weather Service are tracking a major system moving into the Front Range late Saturday, January 24th.
With forecasts calling for 5 to 10+ inches of snow and temperatures plummeting into the single digits, this isn’t just a powder day for skiers—it’s a stress test for your roof.
At No Limit Roofing and Restoration, we want our Denver neighbors to be prepared. Here is exactly what this specific storm pattern means for your home and how to stop damage before it starts.
The Real Danger: It’s Not the Snow, It’s the Ice
The forecast predicts a classic Colorado “Freeze-Thaw” setup:
- Heavy Snow falls Saturday night.
- Sun hits the roof Sunday/Monday, melting the bottom layer.
- Freezing Temps at night turn that runoff into Ice Dams.
What is an Ice Dam? It’s a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of your roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off. The water backs up behind the dam and leaks under your shingles and into your ceiling.
3 Steps to Take BEFORE Saturday Night
1. Clear Your Gutters (If Safe) If your gutters are full of pine needles from the fall, they will freeze solid instantly. If you can safely reach them, clear the debris so snowmelt has somewhere to go.
2. Check Your Downspouts Make sure your downspout extensions are attached and pointing at least 4 feet away from your foundation. You don’t want that melting snow pooling against your basement walls.
3. Look at Your Attic Vents From the ground, look up at your eaves. Are your soffit vents blocked by insulation or bird nests? Your attic needs to “breathe” to keep the roof cold and prevent ice dams.
What to Do AFTER the Storm
Once the snow stops flying on Sunday, take a walk around your property (on the ground—stay off the roof!).
- Look for “Icicles of Death”: Giant icicles hanging from your gutters are a sign that heat is escaping your home and melting the snow too fast. This is a red flag for ice dams.
- Check Interior Ceilings: Look for new water spots in the corners of rooms or near the chimney.
- Don’t Use Salt on the Roof: Never throw rock salt on your roof to melt ice; it will corrode your nails and destroy your shingles.
Worried About Your Roof?
This storm is going to be heavy. If you see signs of leaking or suspect your roof can’t handle the load, don’t guess.
